Download the software from our web site to a temporary folder on your hard drive
outside of the folder where you wish to install NetObjects Fusion. Double click on the
installer icon and the program will automatically launch the installer.
Please follow the on screen installation directions. The necessary files will be installed
by default in a folder called NetObjects Fusion on your hard drive.
The data files created with NetObjects Fusion have a .NOD extension. The files will
be stored by default in the User Sites folder.
NetObjects Fusion 2.0 for Macintosh will update your QuickTime Library to the latest
version, QuickTime 2.5.
C) Upgrading a NetObjects Fusion 1.0 Site to 2.0
============================================
You can run both NetObjects Fusion 1.0 and 2.0 for Macintosh on the same machine.
NetObjects Fusion 2.0 is designed to be compatible with any .nod files you created with
a previous release of NetObjects Fusion. When you first open a file created with
NetObjects Fusion 1.0, the program will offer you the choice to upgrade the file from
a copy of the original file before proceeding. We recommend that you do so. If you
choose "Yes", NetObjects Fusion 2.0 will automatically make a copy of your 1.0 file and
open the copy (in the 2.0 format).
To guarantee the re-usability of your 1.0 .nod files, we HIGHLY recommend
that you follow these steps to upgrade your existing site:
1) To make a copy of your .nod in NetObjects Fusion 2.0:
a) Open NetObjects Fusion 2.0
b) Select File | Open Site, find and select your 1.0 .nod file, and click
Open. A warning dialog appears asking if you would like to open a copy
instead.
c) Click Yes.
d) Enter a descriptive name for the .nod copy, and save it in the same
directory as the original .nod. Your .nod file now opens in NetObjects Fusion
2.0
2) To import the copy of your new .nod into a new 2.0 site:
a) Select File | New Site, enter a descriptive name for what will be your
new upgraded, working site.
b) Click the AutoSite Template radio button and choose the "Import" template
and click OK.
b) In Site view, select File | Import Section, click "Other," and open the
copy of your 1.0 .nod file that you made earlier. (Choose "NetObjects Fusion
Files (*.nod)" in the File Type dropdown menu.)
c) In the Import Section dialog, click OK and wait until the site is
imported.
Your site is now in NetObjects Fusion 2.0, but has two home pages.
3) To remove the extra home page from your new upgraded site:
a) Double click on the home page in the second level of your site to go to
Page view.
b) Click on the layout area, select Edit | Select All, and then select Edit |
Copy to copy all the contents.
c) Go the top Home page in Page view, click in the upper left of the Layout
and select Edit | Paste.
d) In Site view, move all the pages on the third level to the right of the
second Home page.
e) Once the second Home page has no children, click on it and press "Delete."
4) To apply the original style to the site:
a) In Style view, if the style appears blank in the Style Gallery go to the Finder.
b) From the Finder, copy or drag the contents of the 1.0 style folder(s) into your
NetObjects Fusion 2.0:Styles Folder.
c) In the Style View of your site, select Edit | Update Styles List.
d) Click OK and your 1.0 style will become part of your new file.
e) Click on the style you imported and click "Set Style."
Once the files have been opened in NetObjects Fusion 2.0 they are *NOT*
backward compatible and cannot be used with NetObjects Fusion 1.0 for
Macintosh or Windows. They can however can be shared with 2.0 Windows
and Macintosh users.
NetObjects Fusion 2.0 is shipping with a new set of SiteStyles. If you wish to
continue using a 1.0 SiteStyle with a new site, please follow these steps"
1) To use a 1.0 style in a 2.0 .nod file you are building from scratch:
a) Copy the specific 1.0 style folder(s) into your NetObjects Fusion 2.0: Styles Folder.
b) In the Style View of your new site, select Edit | Update Styles List.
c) Click OK and your 1.0 style will become part of your new file.
D) Putting certain JavaScripts in Your Layouts
==============================================
The JavaScript functions document.write() and document.writeln() will not
work in Netscape browsers when NetObjects Fusion generates your pages with
a nested table structure. Whether you optimize your table structure for
columns or rows, NetObjects Fusion 2.0 will generate all pages with a
nested table structure by default. To disable nested table structure
generation, simply add a special comment to your Layout or MasterBorder
script before your JavaScript.
To ensure that JavaScript functions such as document.write() and
document.writeln() will work inside NetObjects Fusion 2.0 tables,
please follow this procedure:
1. Click on the MasterBorder or Layout
2. Choose the script button in the properties palette
3. Click in the BEGINNING OF BODY field in the Script dialog box
4. type <!--NOSMARTTABLES-->
5. Add your document.write() or other text-based JavaScript function
anywhere on the page after this comment
6. Click OK
E) Usage Suggestions
=======================
*) NetObjects Fusion 2.0 has a new daily back-up feature. NetObjects Fusion
will create one distinct back up every day that you work on your site. If you
wish to use your back-up file, we recommend that you copy the file and rename
it before using the file.
*) If you are building a site larger than 300 pages, you may encounter a loss of
performance. If this happens, please allocate more memory to NetObjects Fusion.
*) Some JavaScript functions may need to be moved from the body of the document
into the head (either the Inside Head Tag field or the Beginning of Body field
of the Layout Script dialog box). There is a bug in Netscape Navigator where
certain JavaScript functions defined in nested tables get ignored. Since we are
now using nested tables, some functions might not work when they are defined
inside the body. Refer to section D above for more information.
*) If you are publishing the Message Board or AutoForms component to a WebStar
server, be sure to install MacPerl 5.x on the server to support the correct Apple Events.
*) After importing a site, some of the pages may have some overlapping objects. You
can try to adjust the font size in the Preferences dialog to match the original settings
that were used when designing the site. To find overlapping elements quickly, select
Page | Overlapping Elements in the Page View.
*) When importing a local site, make sure to fill out the domain name field.
This will ensure that pages and links in the imported pages are correctly handled
as internal objects.
*) If you are trying to create a background that aligns with your layout, Netscape
Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer use different background offsets on the
Macintosh and Windows platforms. In the Preferences Dialog, choose the offset
that matches the browsers used by the majority of your viewers. To avoid this
problem, you can publish your site using frames which behave the same across
platforms and browsers.
*) External HTML pages will be published into a folder called "MY_HTML." Be
sure that all of your links and assets refer to the correct folder upon publishing.
NetObjects Fusion will not automatically move the assets.
*) If you should experience complications during FTP, perform a local stage of your site
and then use a third party FTP application to send up your staged folder to your web server.
F) Known Conflicts
====================
*) If you are running System 7.5 you must have AppleGuide Version 2.0.1 to use the NetObjects Fusion Guide.
*) NetObjects Fusion has a conflict with the extensions for Now Up To Date. Turn off
Now Up To Date in the preferences for that application when you are running NetObjects
Fusion.
*) NetObjects Fusion also has a conflict with Kaleidoscope and Dialog View. Your
menus and dialog boxes will be out of alignment. Turn off both extensions when
running NetObjects Fusion.
*) If you use the MS Office control panels to switch between applications, you will crash
NetObjects Fusion when you hit Cmd + Tab.
*) Internet Explorer 3.01b has some problems displaying Java applets and may have
trouble with some of the NFX Components. Do not run Internet Explorer with the Microsoft
Java JIT selected.
*) Adobe Type Manager has some conflicts with Java, and if you use the Dynabuttons
Component, you may not see anti-aliased text on your Dynabuttons.
*) NetObjects Fusion may experience irregularities when running in millions of colors
with the Twin Turbo(tm) video accelerator. If you check "Caps lock disables acceleration"
in the Twin Turbo General Controls panel the irregularities should be resolved.
